Night Sweating
Night sweating is a condition that causes you to sweat excessively during sleep. This can happen for any number of reasons, including environmental issues that increase the amount of sweat for natural reasons. Whether it can be treated or not largely depends on the root cause of the sweating.
To find out if your sweating may be the result of a medical condition, try changing a few things in the bedroom. Start wearing lighter night clothes, remove socks, and pull your hair up off your neck. Some beds will feel warmer than others, so you may need a bed spread that holds less heat. Memory foam beds are known to capture a lot of heat and can get quite sticky for some people. Experiment with the temperature in your home at night as well. See if turning down the temperature a little or opening a window will bring a reduction or complete halt to the sweating.
Once you have tried changing your sleeping environment and it does not work and you are sweating to the point that it is uncomfortable. By interrupting your sleep, then there is a chance it could be caused by a medical condition. Sweating at night can be caused by something as natural as menopause or as serious as hypertension. In general, those who suffer a real medical condition will soak through clothing and bedding over the course of a night.
Lighter, less voluminous amounts of sweat are more likely to be caused by the body simply overheating. In most cases, someone who suffers from hyperhidrosis in general will sweat at other times during the day, not just at night.
If the sweating is caused by bigger issues, then diagnosis and treatment for the real medical issue will be needed. A doctor may be able to prescribe medication that will decrease the activity of sweat glands in the body if the case is severe enough.
Night sweating may be an indication of other illnesses that must be addressed by a doctor. Conditions that might result in excessive sweating at night include certain cancers such as lymphoma. Night sweating itself does not mean there is a problem, but you must consult with your doctor if taking other measures to lower body temperature does not work.
Night sweating can be extremely uncomfortable, especially if it is excessive or happens continually. If you suffer from sweating that is interfering with your nightly rest, take affirmative steps to eliminate any underlying reasons why this is occurring. While there may be perfectly benign reasons for the sweating, only a doctor can help you resolve them.
